Prison inmate charged with attempted murder

A 47 year-old man has been charged with the attempted murder of a prisoner at Rimutaka.

Detective Grant Mumby said the alleged stabbing happened on Boxing Day at the prison after an argument.

He said the 47 year-old would appear in the Upper Hutt District Court on Wednesday.

Mr Mumby said the circumstances of the stabbing were still being investigated.

In the week following the incident, NZPA reported that the attack happened after an argument between two prisoners over a feral cat.

The press association reported that the victim was allegedly stabbed six times in the neck when he entered a room and scared the cat.
