Mecosta County Jail escapee used toenail clipper, a towel hook, legal paper, glass

Update: Inmate’s MacGyver ingenuity, weak glass lead to prison escape, report shows

Jonathan Good

GRAND RAPIDS — Like a criminal MacGyver, inmate Jonathan Good used a toenail clipper, a towel hook, his stacks of legal paper and possibly the lowest bidder on jail security glass to make his escape from the Mecosta County Jail.

The details of his Thanksgiving-week escape were laid out today in a report from the Mecosta County Sheriff. Good, a convicted murderer who was being held on a string of felony charges, was recaptured near Detroit a few days later.

Among the suggestions to stop a repeat performance will be more video surveillance cameras, including on the jail’s roof.
