Claims prisoners are attempting escape to avoid assaults

The Shadow Attorney General, Michael Hodgman has told a budget estimates hearing in Hobart, that he’s been told of numerous cases of assault against prisoners, including rape.

He said he has been told prisoners are attempting to escape jail to avoid being raped or assaulted by other prisoners.

The director of prisons, Graeme Barber says any allegations of abuse are investigated by police.

The Attorney General, Steve Kons says he’ll find out how many cases have been referred.

The hearing has also been told there are about 525 people in Tasmanian prisons, which is slightly down on last year’s record high.

Approximately 85 of those are classified as maximum security.
