Ex-inmate accused of flashing a gun at guards outside jail

A Sciota man is awaiting a future court appearance on charges of recently displaying a handgun to corrections officers outside Monroe County Correctional Facility, according to law enforcement sources.

Former inmate Robert Witten, 22, was on probation at the time of the incident, having pleaded guilty in several prior cases involving arson and criminal trespassing.

According to sources, Witten recently exchanged words with two corrections officers at the Schoch’s gas station near the jail in Snydersville. Minutes later, as the guards were walking into the jail to start their shift, Witten drove up to them in the parking lot, displayed a handgun and then drove away.

He subsequently was arrested and as of Friday was being detained in Lackawanna County Correctional Facility, awaiting a court appearance in Monroe County.

No further details have been released on the circumstances surrounding this incident.
