Prison inmates attack guards

Two guards were badly beaten by a mob of Rimutaka Prison inmates, the Corrections Department says.

The attack in the Upper Hutt prison this week was a cowardly and unprovoked assault and it was considering stab-proof vests for guards, Corrections said.

The two guards were recovering at home after being treated at hospital on Tuesday night after the attack, The Dominion Post reported.

Five inmates attacked one guard, then dragged him into the laundry and beat him. Another guard who to came to help was also assaulted.

The department said it was not considering issuing staff with weapons at this stage.

Guards have been attacked 67 times in New Zealand prisons in the past financial year, up from 31 the previous year.

Corrections Association president Beven Hanlon said he wanted an urgent review of staff safety and better tools for the job.

Police and Corrections are investigating the attack.
