Corrections Officer Assaulted by Inmate

A Corrections Officer is recovering after a savage attack by an inmate.

The assault happened Tuesday at SCI Smithfield in Huntingdon County.

C.O. Russell Deeters is stabilizing, but he’s still got some very serious injuries. And as of 5:00 on Wednesday afternoon SCI Smithfield was still under partial lockdown.

State Police say the inmate John Carter attacked Deeters about 3:00 in the yard at the Huntingdon County institution.

Prison officials say Deeters didn’t do anything to provoke Carter. A source who inside the prison, who didn’t want to be named, said Deeters just asked Carter to turn down his radio, and the inmate snapped.

Prison officials did confirm that the whole attack took less than ten seconds and no weapons were involved. Other corrections officers ran over and Carter stopped hitting Deeters. He initially acted like he was going to attack the other officers, but he surrendered instead.

Deeters suffered a broken jaw, crushed sinuses and several other head injuries.

Prison officials say Carter has a long history of misconduct inside the prison system. He was in a restricted area until April of this year.

The officer was first flown to the Altoona Regional Health System for treatment, and then he was flown on to Pittsburgh. Hospital officials aren’t releasing his condition, but again the Smithfield representative said Deeters is stabilizing.

Carter was transferred out of Smithfield and is currently being held in SCI Huntingdon. Smithfield is gradually coming out of lockdown status.
