Pelican Bay prison guard stabbed in face

Officials at Pelican Bay State Prison in Crescent City reported two maximum-security inmates attacked and stabbed a correctional officer in the face and neck Sunday night.

At around 8 p.m., Joel Campos, 19, and Felipe Ruiz, 25, were in the general population yard when they attacked Officer Jeremy Kingstrom, 31, prison officials reported.

Kingstrom was transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. According to a Pelican Bay report, he has since been released.

According to information from Pelican Bay, Campos is serving a life sentence for kidnapping and car theft. Ruiz was sentenced to 98 years for two counts of attempted murder, shooting at an inhabited dwelling, street gang activity and assault with a firearm.

The prison is on lockdown as officials investigate the motive for the seemingly unprovoked attack, Pelican Bay reported. The Del Norte County District Attorney’s Office is aiding the investigation.
