Stabbing forces lockdown at Matsqui Institution

The Matsqui Institution in Abbotsford, B.C., was in lockdown Sunday after two inmates were injured during a stabbing, a spokesman for the Correctional Service of Canada said.

One man was airlifted to hospital with multiple stab wounds to the chest and is in stable condition, CSC Pacific region spokesman Dave Lefebvre told CBC News.

Another man suffered less serious stab wounds and was also taken to hospital. He was expected to return to the medium-security institution, which houses 326 offenders, later Sunday.

“The lockdown will be in place as long as it needs to be, in order to facilitate the search for weapons and suspects, and in order to ensure the safety of the institution, the staff, and the inmates,” Lefebvre said.

Staff have begun an internal investigation.

Abbotsford police were also called in and were looking into the assault.  No name has been released.
