Corrections officer gets Medal of Valor

from his department — the first time in more than 50 years such an award has been given.

On Feb. 25, senior correctional Officer Amizah Smith III was driving a prison work detail bus on Indian Trail Road near Oakbrook Parkway. He saw a car strike a guardrail, bounce back into the road and catch fire

forced open the driver’s door and helped out that person. Smith then freed an injured passenger and carried her to safety. Another officer and he then put out the fire.

A four-year veteran of the Gwinnett County Department of Corrections, Smith was given the department’s Medal of Valor.
