Jail evaluations completed after alleged abuse cases

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY  —  At the end of February, an independent panel was created to assess the procedures carried out at the Orient Road and Faulkenberg Road jails.

The investigations was launched after numerous inmates claimed they were abused by deputies.

The first, of a series of complaints, came from Brian Sterner.  Surveillance video shows a deputy dumping Sterner, who is paralyzed, from his wheelchair.

The panel met six times and interviewed twenty witnesses about the procedures used at the jails.

In the report, the panel praised Sheriff David Gee and found proper procedures are in place at the jails.

The panel, however, did not investigate the recent allegations of abuse, because they are still under investigation.  The panel will meet to review those incidents as investigations are closed.
