		<description>I wanted to recommend a book that’s coming out soon. &quot;Mother California: A Story of Redemption Behind Bars&quot; is the story of and by Kenneth E. Hartman, who is currently serving a life sentence without parole for a murder he committed as a nineteen-year-old. Without making appeals to sympathy, Mr. Hartman chronicles his transformation from a misguided adolescent into an emotionally and intellectually mature adult, husband, and father.

Mr. Hartman is the chairman of the Honor Program, which he helped initiate in 2000 to promote positive behavior within prisons. Members must abstain from drugs, gangs, and violence, while working on projects that benefit the communities both inside and outside of prison. His commitment to this program and his family confirms that redemption is indeed possible.

During his incarceration, Mr. Hartman honed his writing ability through a creative writing course. The instruction and mentorship he received enhanced his self-awareness, which enabled him to express thoughts and sentiments that were previously unrealized. For a sample of Mr. Hartman’s writing, I encourage you to check out his recent op-ed piece in The New York Times&quot;
http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/06/opinion/06hartman.html

The book is scheduled to be published in October. I hope you’ll take a look!
