Teenagers sentenced for assaulting correctional officer
Two teenage girls were sentenced Tuesday to three to four years in prison for assaulting a correctional officer.
In July, Mary Likely, 16, pleaded no contest and Desiree Levering, 15, pleaded guilty to the assault charge.
Douglas County District Judge J. Michael Coffey found them both guilty and issued matching sentences.
The assault charges stemmed from altercations Likely and Levering had with corrections officers at the Douglas County Youth Detention Center, where they have been housed since their arrest last fall in connection with a carjacking.
Prosecutors ended up dropping robbery charges against Likely and Levering after investigators were unable to locate the victim of the Oct. 3 carjacking, in which a baby was removed from the car.
The teens faced up to five years in prison. With credit for about 11 months already served, the teens will be eligible for parole in about seven months.
